Famous for giddily manipulating audiences in order to make his point, Bunuel boldly blurs the line between fantasy and reality once again. It is this gleeful mischievousness that makes BELLE DE JOUR such a classic. Catherine Deneuve's performance reaffirms her status as one of world cinema's most electrifying actresses. Based on Joseph Kessel's 1928 novel, the film follows a recently married French housewife, Severine (Deneuve), as she is overcome by a wash of uncontainable erotic passions. After a brutal gang rape turns out to be mere fantasy, Severine finds herself in a nearby brothel acting out a series of sexual acts. At night, she returns home to her loving husband, Pierre (Jean Sorel), who is unaware of the double life that she is leading--or is she, really? [More]

Reviews for Belle de Jour
But beyond the artistry, this film stands as the most accessible of Buñuel's work.
A wise, enormously enjoyable film about the power of fantasy -- a toast to the importance of dreams.
I have seen few, if any, films that portray the inner struggles of a modern woman so honestly and beautifully.
A quarter of a century after it was made and a decade after Bunuel's death, Belle de Jour continues to baffle and beguile. And seduce.
Luis Buñuel creates an eminently classy film that is a splendid piece of escapism for the viewer. Central to this is Catherine Deneuve who oozes such sophisticated sexuality that one becomes utterly immersed in her potentially dangerous adventure.
a fascination in the brilliance of its knowing detail about sexual attraction/revulsion, about the subtleties of desire
They don't make movies this intelligent, funny, engaging and just plain good anymore.
Belle de Jour is a definitive statement on eroticism, and a deeply personal experience.
The result is a film that may be less shocking than it was in 1967, but is no less disturbing or mesmerizing.
Any number of conclusions may be drawn as to the purpose of the film, and they'd all be correct. The mark of a classic.
A delightful puzzle, and [Catherine] Deneuve's finest hour-and-a-half.
The director may have been ahead of his time, but he displays no more compassion for his characters than a psycho killer shows for his victims.
