Here, an earthling sent to find the astronauts of the original film discovers not only a world of intelligent, talking apes, but an underground cult of grotesque "humans" who are the survivors of a nuclear blast years ago. Unfortunately, these mutants worship a nuclear bomb, a weapon which not only is the centerpiece of their society, but can be detonated at any time... [More]

  • In the acclaimed sequel to Planet of the Apes, another astronaut (James Franciscus) crashes through the time barrier searching for the missing Taylor (Charlton Heston). The daring rescue leads to a subterranean city where mutant humans, who practice mind control, worship a weapon capable of destroying the entire planet. Both an action-oriented science-fiction adventure and a wry commentary on today's world, it's imaginative entertainment for fantasy buffs of all ages.

A lot less poky than the original, and generally more entertaining.

As the apes close in and the mutants squeal their annoying noises, it's hard to care which side wins or loses, and that is a great disappointment after the excitement of the first film.

An effective sequel that takes an increasingly dark look at the unavoidable nature of war.

The best it would seem the screenwriters would come up with was having another NASA astronaut crash-land on the planet in which apes are the dominant species and the humans inferior.

[A] quickie follow-up that vainly tries to imitate the look of the original on an obviously limited budget, and for the most part, eschews the philosophical, social, and racial subtext of the first film in favor of straightforward shoot-em-up.

Social commentary was not one of this glum film's strong points.

This first sequel to Planet of the Apes isn't bad, but already shows the way the original conception was to degenerate into routine comic strip adventure.

More rubbery ape masks, but grimmer and sillier.
