Straightforward, unembellished account that eschews the Hollywood sentiment of Song of Bernadette and speculative psychology of Cavalier's Thérèse.

A year after an unemployed miller (Jean-Marc Bory) moves his family into grim lodgings in Lourdes, France, his 14-year-old asthmatic, illiterate daughter, Bernadette (Sydney Penny), sees a holy light that later distinguishes her as a beautiful young woman. Thus begins the odyssey of BERNADETTE, the story of the 19th Century girl who became a saint and made the Massabielle grotto the destination of pilgrimages for millions of Catholics worldwide. Conversing with the women she sees in the grotto over the next few months, Bernadette displays devout, trancelike behavior. Eventually, word of her visions grow, and crowds follow her to the grotto where people are cured by the waters from a spring Bernadette has cleared. But, as is the case with so many saints, secular authorities are threatened by the popular gatherings and subject the girl to police inquiry and medical review. Even the local monsignor and her doctor (Bernard Dheran) are skeptical. BERNADETTE is a sensitive, but unsentimental historical drama that examines ideas of forthright simplicity and untutored wisdom in the face of persecution. [More]
