This is the stuff of classic comedy (of a certain type), but the film completely fails in its attempt to make anyone endearing or remotely likable.

It doesn't matter if you get Big Mamma's Boy confused with Martin Lawrence's terrible Big Momma's House franchise. The overall outcome for this cringe-inducing comedy is about the same.

If the script is thin and the direction routine, at least many of the performances are engaging, even though there's nothing very subtle in what they're called upon to do.

While director Franco Di Chiera seems desperate to make the comedy work, it never does due to a derivative script and stilted performances.

The film is charmingly light-hearted but incredibly formulaic. It could have been a big hit - about 25 years ago.

If I didn't know better, I would have said this is an Australian film made about 50 years ago, an early spoof on Italian migrants

The script is badly underdeveloped, resulting in a story where nothing is believable; neither the key relationships nor the reality in which it is set. It's a bit like a TV sitcom without the laughs

Overcooked Aussie rom-com skimps on laughs.
