Consensus: Big Momma's House is funny in some parts, but it is essentially a one-joke movie.

Runtime: 1 hr 40 mins

Genre: Comedies

Box Office: $492,734

Synopsis: FBI agent Malcolm Turner is tough, smart and a master of disguise. There's nothing he can't handle. Stop a brutal crime ring? No problem. Malcolm transforms himself into an aged Asian man to crack... FBI agent Malcolm Turner is tough, smart and a master of disguise. There's nothing he can't handle. Stop a brutal crime ring? No problem. Malcolm transforms himself into an aged Asian man to crack the case.

Malcolm's latest assignment brings him to a small southern town, where he's determined to trap a brutal bank robber (and recent prison escapee). Malcolm sets up a stakeout across from the home of a southern matriarch known as Big Momma, who's about to be visited by the con's former flame, Sherry, and her son.

It's a simple plan, but there's one Big Problem: Big Momma has unexpectedly left town. So Malcolm, taking on his most challenging "role" ever, decides to impersonate the cantankerous Southern granny. Using a few tricks of disguise, he completely transforms himself into Big Momma, even taking on the corpulent septuagenarian's everyday routine - from cooking soul food to delivering babies to "testifying" at the local church.

As if things weren't complicated enough, Malcolm finds himself falling for Sherry, who might be hiding some stolen cash. Now, Malcolm/Big Momma must somehow find a way to get his man -and woman.

The more irritating aspect of Big Momma's House is the feeling of inevitability attached to each and every assembly-line joke.

This is a film that appears to have been made without benefit of a script -- it's a seemingly random collection of shots and scenes strung together with no concern for continuity, common sense, or an audience's intelligence.

A fat suit with a paper-thin plot does not a movie make.

The saddest thing about Big Momma's House is that it wastes a talented cast in roles that force them to act like idiots in order for the plot to advance.

Lawrence gives this depressing effort his all, but that is not nearly enough.

Farcical adroitness and Martin's ablity to turn on the charm keep Big Momma's House perking along.

The driving force that kept us rolling in the aisles focuses on the brilliant physical comedy of Lawrence.

The thin sliver of a plot is just an excuse to get Lawrence in costume and let him do his thing.

The movie has some big laughs, yes, but never reaches takeoff velocity.

The comic spell that hangs over the plot like a tent of engorged cellulite, and which asks us to dig every corny, contrived, old-hat bit of folksy nonsense and jolly raunch that the writers can cram into us.

It's not only inferior to all Murphy's movies (even Coming to America), it's a lot less funny than most of Lawrence's own film work.

Big Momma's House certainly isn't a great film, but it's a fun and funny enough diversion that one probably won't really mind.
