Consensus: The Big Tease may be predictable, but the buoyant performances keep you laughing once you give in to the silliness.

Crawford is going to L.A. to participate in the World Hairdressing International Federation's renowned Platinum Scissors competition, the apex of the styling world. Sporting his tartan suit, with documentary filmmaker Martin Samuels (Chris Langham) in tow, Crawford arrives only to learn that he was invited to attend, not compete in the Hair Off. Upset but determined, Crawford vows to get his H.A.G (Hairdressers of America Guild) card - the requirement for entry. To do so, he must work for one day in an American salon, but is laughed out the door at Valhenna, the shop of super-stylist Stig Ludwigssen (David Rasche). With new friend, limo driver/actor Eamonn (Donal Logue), Crawford finagles the assistance of publicist Candy Harper (Frances Fisher) on his quest. Will the WHIF president (Mary McCormack) allow Crawford to compete for his family and friends back in Scotland? Or will Norwegian nemesis Stig ruin everything? Boasting a parade of celebrity cameos from Drew Carey to Veronica Webb, Allen's film is highly entertaining and creates genuine, charming characters worth cheering for. [More]

There are films that succeed in spite of themselves and there are films that remain well-meaning, slightly interesting failures. Lodged somewhere between these two related poles is The Big Tease, a slight, breezy comedy with carefree independent fi
Some of the jokes are obvious and fall flat, but others work their sly charm on you.
Ferguson plays it all with so much heart you'll find yourself seriously rooting for a spiky-haired Scotsman.
Crawford's such a good-hearted guy, you can't help but want a cut from his clippers.
Crawford is engaging as what he calls 'Rocky in Curlers,' though he wears out his welcome by the end.
The Big Tease perfectly captures and lampoons the essence of Hollywood.

A strange thing happened from the 25-minute mark: I began to be charmed by this film.
The Big Tease aims to do nothing but please, and it accomplishes its modest aim with charm and intelligence.
Just plain, good, clean fun; the tease climaxes in a ridiculous display of hair presentation.
