The first part of the film chronicles the Civil War as experienced through the eyes of two families; the Stonemans from the North, and the Camerons of the South. Lifelong friends, they become divided by the Mason-Dixon line, with tragic results. Large-scale battle sequences and meticulous historical details culminate with a staged re-creation of Lincoln's assassination. The second half of the film chronicles the Reconstruction, as Congressman Austin Stoneman (Ralph Lewis) puts evil Silas Lynch (George Siegmann) in charge of the liberated slaves at the Cameron hometown of Piedmont. Armed with the right to vote, the freed slaves cause all sorts of trouble until Ben Cameron (Henry B. Walthall) founds the Ku Klux Klan and restores order and "decency" to the troubled land. While THE BIRTH OF A NATION was a major step forward in the history of filmmaking, it must be noted that the film supports a racist worldview. But there is no denying that it remains a groundbreaking achievement, setting a high watermark for film as an art form. [More]

  • Making headlines from the day it opened in 1915, "The Birth of a Nation" became the most successful silent film ever made, grossing over $10 million in its first run. Director D.W. Griffith's audacious and bravura achievement turned a lurid, negrophobic play called "The Clansman" into a three-hour epic that traces the Civil War, the assassination of Lincoln and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan through the lives of two families. Denounced even at the time for its racism, the film's sweep and scope set a standard for film spectacle and absorbing historical melodrama, and it remains America's most controversial cinematic landmark.

The civil war battle pictures, taken in panorama, represent enormous effort and achieve a striking degree of success.

The biggest challenge the film provided for its audiences is perhaps to decide when 'ground-breaking, dedicated, serious cinematic art' must be reviled as politically reprehensible.

This notoriously problematic melodrama is the first true screen epic and arguably the most important motion picture ever made.

Essential for film history but often difficult to watch (cringe as uppity white men in blackface go on the attack).

Griffith's later films are unquestionably superior. But here, in a very real sense, is where the movies began, both as an art and as a business.

We must credit Griffith for expanding the concept of film, since previous Nickelodeon films were limited to one reel

It's a film that can easily be used to teach against racism, and it should be cherished instead of frowned upon.

O Nascimento de uma Nação é um filme absolutamente desprezível e repugnante. Infelizmente, também é uma das obras mais importantes da história do Cinema.
