Kidman accomplishes a remarkable feat of transformation, adopting not only an accent, but a slightly seedy, faintly feral demeanor that almost makes you forget her icy good looks and fashion model's figure.

Consensus: Kidman shows her range in this quirky movie, but the shift in tone from romantic comedy to thriller may leave viewers unsatisfied.

When she finally... At a London airport, shy bank clerk John (Ben Chaplin) watches passengers arriving from an international flight. He's waiting for his mail order bride to arrive from Russia. When she finally appears, she's not exactly what John had in mind--tall, thin, and gangly, with scruffy hair and rings around her eyes, Nadia (Nicole Kidman) seems worn, apprehensive, and tired. As he drives her home, John discovers she can't speak a word of English, but she does smoke prodigiously. He makes repeated calls to the agency that arranged the marriage, leaving messages that a mistake has been made. But although Nadia doesn't know any English, John soon discovers that she knows all about sex. He changes his mind about sending her back. The opening of director Jez Butterworth's BIRTHDAY GIRL is amusing and raunchy. But the film takes off in another direction when, on Nadia's birthday, two boisterous Russians (exuberantly played by French actors Vincent Cassel and Matthieu Kassovitz) arrive and take over John's home. The clever, twisting narrative that follows is, by turns, surprising, funny, and suspenseful. Chaplin's thoughtful performance counterbalances Kidman's troubled volatile heroine, who is not who she seems to be. [More]

Reviews for Birthday Girl
Kidman is really the only thing that's worth watching in Birthday Girl, a film by the stage-trained Jez Butterworth (Mojo) that serves as yet another example of the sad decline of British comedies in the post-Full Monty world.
For a supposedly fast-moving thriller -- and a movie that takes only 93 minutes -- Birthday Girl is surprisingly sluggish.
It's the cute frissons of discovery and humor between Chaplin and Kidman that keep this nicely wound clock not just ticking, but humming.
Nicole Kidman isn't bad as a Russian bride in this noirish sex comedy, but her feeble costar could use a good tug.
Birthday Girl doesn't try to surprise us with plot twists, but rather seems to enjoy its own transparency.
An entertaining British hybrid of comedy, caper thrills and quirky romance.
Would've been nice if the screenwriters had trusted audiences to understand a complex story, and left off the film's predictable denouement. Then Nadia's birthday might not have been such a bad day after all.
The Birthday Girl offers enough in the way of off-kilter charms and genuine twists to remain engaging despite being a deeply weird movie.
It's a fast-moving, original film for the first 45 minutes, and a deathly tedious one for the next 45. It balances out to be mediocre.
Given a smaller frame and literally darker shades to work with than she's accustomed to, Kidman is friskier, livelier and arguably more engaging than she's ever been.
The plot convolutions ultimately add up to nothing more than jerking the audience's chain.
The film's overall mood and focus is interesting but constantly unfulfilling.
Birthday Girl won't make you forget Kidman's better work, but it's not a film you long to excise from your memory.
Birthday Girl walks a tricky tightrope between being wickedly funny and just plain wicked.
The ads for Birthday Girl predict that 'somebody's in for a big surprise.' That's a reference to the characters but it applies equally to audiences. That is a good thing.
