The movie's downfall is to substitute plot for personality. It doesn't really know or care about the characters, and uses them as markers for a series of preordained events.

The movie's director, screenwriters, and producer (three brothers) clearly intended to make a movie that transcends genre, but it does not really work.

Demonstrate that a couple of talented actors can make a bland movie better.

Nicole Kidman was on a roll with Moulin Rouge and The Others, and that roll has come to a screeching halt.

It's a fast-moving, original film for the first 45 minutes, and a deathly tedious one for the next 45. It balances out to be mediocre.

...the story is far-flung, illogical, and plain stupid.

It's all over the road -- sometimes farce, sometimes horror, sometimes thriller, sometimes police procedural. And the truth is, no one in it is particularly sympathetic.

The film has potential, but never manages to put the pieces together quite right.

Kidman is really the only thing that's worth watching in Birthday Girl, a film by the stage-trained Jez Butterworth (Mojo) that serves as yet another example of the sad decline of British comedies in the post-Full Monty world.

Overall, the outlandish proceedings fall as flat as a Russian blini. Birthday Girl unwraps its package alright, but the contents inside only reinforce what a psuedo-stylish actioner Butterworth's thrilling cinematic gift really is.

If you ever wanted to see Nicole Kidman buck naked and tied to the bedposts, then Birthday Girl is your gift. Otherwise, it's kind of a party-pooper with a predictable plot and contrived characters.

Chaplin's performance is the only present Birthday Girl offers.

It may not make a lasting impression, but at the same time you may find its first half teasingly, tantalizingly good fun and its second half, well, who knows.

O filme tenta ser comédia romântica, suspense erótico, thriller e assim por diante. A única que se salva é Kidman, belíssima como sempre e com um sotaque russo sedutor.

Mostly ... it's a disappointment -- except as a showcase for Kidman.

Because some of the characters pretend to be people they are not, the actors look like victims of multiple-personality disorder.

The creators of Birthday Girl could optimistically advertise that they give viewers two movies for the price of one. Despite the Kidman charisma, don't consider that a bonus.
