Trying to coax a horror-thriller out of the world of ballet doesn't begin to work for Darren Aronofsky.
This doesn't sound extremely negative. He does make it seem like it is a good visual experience. I don't know, I'm still really excited to see this film.

How can you possibly do this for a living?

aronofsky is taking something as beautiful and graceful and feminine as the ballet and making it dark and perverted and disturbing. he is not coaxing, he's drowning.

I just want to say that, being a dancer whose taken ballet and knowing many ballerinas, this movie portrays a said of ballet that so many people do not see. Yes, on stage, ballet is a beautiful and graceful art, and I love watching it. However, how do those dancers reach that level and stay in this shape? It's a constant psychological struggle. I believe that this movie does an amazing job of portraying the dark side of the grace and beauty we see on stage

I also turned my head several times and still thought the film was "perfect".Kirky went too far, telling people in print this film fails or "does not work". I pray not one person puts any credence into what he has to say about this film.Joined this site right after seeing "Black Swan" to ask Kdog if he had some kind of hidden agenda? Or if he was maybe culturally retarded? not to appreciate something so good?I have no relation to anyone involved in this motion picture. But I have worked on major films for the past 15 years.

I hate the response to this review.Just because a person posts a negative review early on does not make them Armond White. I find criticism more entertaining than just plain praise, and I know that there are plenty of fanboys on here. I myself am not digging it as I believe Darren has trouble turning heady concepts into something fitting professional standards of coherence, but know that when a loved director makes a movie, people always intellectualize stuff that simply doesn't matter when logical dissenting arguments are brought up.By your defense of using the past, is A.O. Scott irrelevant for giving Inception a 6 instead of a 10, and posting an editorial about the rabid nature of it's most devout fans?I just hope Darren starts making more subdued, slice of life kind of films. It worked for Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler.

I agree with you, TD. Those who prefer The Fountain to Requiem for a Dream truly baffle me. The Fountain didn't just border on the ridiculous, it was fully there. Black Swan deftly dances around it.
