Black Swan aspires to be little more than a showy, twisty thriller with no attempt at plausibility. But I still found it less and less appealing as it lurched toward the end.
You're an idiot.

All of you haters are cinematic noobs.

omg you guys are douchebags. honestly. you say it barely has anything to do with ballet? of course it doesn't! it's NOT ABOUT BALLET!!!
its about succumbing to stress and pressure and an individual driven insane by a drive to create perfect art. perfect art which unfortunately many people are too simple to understand...

Glad I'm not the only one. I thought it was an over indulgent, smarmy film in which I felt nothing for any of characters. But, hey, each to their own.

I was actually really excited to see this film. I liked the idea of a dark psychological thriller about ballet, I love Nathalie Portman, and the trailer looked pretty good to me minus the lesbian scene. (I don't have a problem with gay romance in cinema but I do have a problem with sexploitation)
The film was an utter disappointment. I agree that it was shot beautifully and it was visually stunning. And they did a good job on making the transitions from Nathalie's face to her dancing body double very smooth. I believe the actors did a good job on portraying their characters. But there were some major problems with the film.
The sexually harassment scene with the director was obscene. It wasn't so much the subject or the content, but it was the way it was filmed. It was filmed like a porno film would be. It was filmed as if the content was hot rather than wrong and disgusting.
The characters were so unrealistic. It's hard for me to get into a psychologically thriller if the main character's personality just seems so implausible. I'm a perfectionist striving to get into an extremely competitive field and I could not relate to her. Yes I get it, she's crazy, she's too uptight, she's a perfectionist, she's a virign! She wants to be a ballet dancer so badly that it drives her crazy! Her first sexual experience is with a creep! Her mother is insane! I can see how this film would appeal to teenagers.
The characters were so one dimensional and implausible. There were too many things going on in the movie. It would have been better to just pick one dysfunctional relationship and run off with that. I couldn't feel sorry for Nina because I couldn't view her as a real person. She didn't remind me of anyone I knew or was ever acquainted with. She seemed like a fictional over the top character. I actually found myself and along with others in the theatre, LAUGHING at some of the more "dramatic" parts of the film. Oh no she's running again!
The message of the movie at the end was nice but lost amongst the rest of the film. The problem with Nina wasn't that she was driven to perfectionism by the harsh ballet world. The problems (plural) with her were that she let her mother run her life, she was already a perfectionist and had obvious mental/personality/social disorders to begin with, and she was easily impressionable.
I have to say though. The masturbation scene was priceless. She's supposed to be a sweet little angel but once she gets one of her fingers in she starts gyrating and moaning like a pornstar.

Yes, EXACTLY! If this was any more predictable, been-there-done-it-did-it, and ridiculously implausible I would have laughed harder and turned it off sooner. I couldn't believe how bad this film was. No redeeming qualities what so ever. I watch 90% of the movies I sit down to, to their conclusions, even the bad ones. This one? Beyond bad. Don't waste a minute. My daughter warned me; I should have listened.

Redeeming qualities? That's the whole point. There are no redeeming qualities with this. It's about a girls decent into madness. The movie focuses on how something like that can happen. To the other person that commented. What's implausible about a young uptight virgin who masturbates? Everyone is sexual to a certain extent. She was releasing herself from the shackles of her mother's dominance and psychological abuse and repression. She was trying to free herself from her tyranny by masturbating. This allows her to morph into her alter ego. Of course, most of the film critics in the world and I could be wrong.

Absolutely nailed it. Horrible character development and completely unbelievable garbage.

The film is completely overrated. Where the hell is the character development? It didn't make me feel anything. I was like "Ok, I get it" through the whole film. It is true what these people say there is nothing realistic or relatable about the main character.
It is just simply boring. Nothing happened that picked my interest. Yes she masturbated in order to loosen up and stop being so frigid. Yes she had a lesbo fantasy with the other girl. Who. Gives. A. Shit.
Seriously I didn't care for anything that happened in the film.

Why do movies have to be realistic? I don't get this 'logic'. Realism on movies is as realiable as realism on photography: they simply don't exist.
