Blood Oranges (1999)
Based on a once topical John Hawkes novel set in 1970, this sexually-charged drama adds insight into the price swinging couples paid for giving free-reign to lust and erotic adventure. Though they have been married for many years, the hippie-like Cyril and Fiona, are very much into the sexual revolution. To Cyril, the whole of life should be dedicated to the pursuit of pleasure. While vacationing at their lovely seaside villa, the floor of which is strewn with delicious blood oranges, the two encounter the one-armed, globe-trotting photographer Hugh, his tired wife Catherine and their three children. A bus accident has left them stranded in the village. One way that the dark and mysterious Hugh makes money is to photograph nude couples. Cyril and Fiona invite them to stay at the villa, and it is there that they seduce the newcomer couple. At first the four are quite happy in their debauchery, but when Fiona learns that the retiring Hugh conceals a dark secret, things fall apart. Though filmmakers Philip and Belinda Haas took their out-of-date examination of promiscuity in marriages seriously, audiences did not, and when it screened at the 1997 Toronto Film Festival, the film was greeted with catcalls and laughter. … More

Critic Reviews for Blood Oranges
With repeated use of such ridiculous, 'risqué' terms as 'the love lunch' and 'sex singer,' can anyone take this film seriously as drama or erotica?
Audience Reviews for Blood Oranges
This film is from the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival, and its a film I would expect at a Film Festival it just had that theme about it. Philip Haas took what would have been just another story and turned it into a masterpiece. The backgrounds were fantastic, and locations out of this world. Story about Love, Romance, Sex and Desire. Put me in a house like this to live. As far as the love life sorry don't share with anyone. Its worth 4 stars. If you haven't seen films from International Film Festivals you should, most never see the light of day on TV or US Movie theaters, you will be shocked at what you can find. Again 4 StarsMore
An intriguing movie about love, relationships, and blind desires. Interesting story plot and cast.More
i remember thinking this movie was okay, I really had wanted to see it because I loved Haas' Music of Chance and Angels and Insects, and then was shocked when everyone hate, hate, hated it. I'd be hard pressed to remember much about it, except that it kept my attention throughout. Should really rewatch this one.More
