The Coen brothers' first picture is... When a bar owner discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife, a complex web of deceit and double crosses ensues in a small Texas town. The Coen brothers' first picture is an intricately plotted film noir filled with surprises at each turn. The cast, largely unkown at the time, includes Dan Hedaya as the cuckolded bar owner, Frances McDormand as the cheating wife, John Getz as the adultering bartender, and the fabulously creepy M. Emmett Walsh as the slimy, sweaty private detective who should not be trusted. The film is a marvel to experience; director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld has created stunning compositions filled with open spaces, and the sound--from the slightest footsteps or dripping water to a sudden shotgun blast--reverberates ominously, as if it is a character unto itself. Directed by Joel Coen and cowritten by Joel and his brother Ethan, BLOOD SIMPLE is an eerie testament to the limitless possibilities of low-budget filmmaking. [More]

Director Joel Coen and his co-screenwriting brother Ethan rarely miss a beat with their smart film noir dialogue and perfect little details...

A deliciously decadent, delightfully twisted and masterfully macabre tale.

We had no idea what we were in for back then, but the film truly did announce the arrival of two major talents.

It’s certainly not a bad film, but it’s hardly the classic reinvention of film noir that it wants to be.

Blood Simple is so derivative -- of Dashiell Hammett and James M. Cain and a thousand and one noirs -- that who or what is being ripped off is essentially beside the point.

The story is haunting and violent, yet shot through with the Coens’ signature brand of weird, deadpan wit and their peculiar melancholy about place and time.

The Coens, then as now, are alive to the possibilities of movies. So savor their technique and the sizzling performances.

The movie is... filled with the little things that make a Coen brothers film unique. Watching it is like going on a ride.

A stylish piece of film noir, it has exasperatingly slow pacing but devilishly demented characters and a wonderfully wicked, labyrinthine plot.

...the movie encapsulates all that has come to typify the Coen brothers' style: engaging narrative, inventive direction, and the juxtaposition of grim violence with moments of sublime, sometimes surreal, human behavior.

The Coens’ trademark aloofness works to perfection in Blood Simple because only the audience has a bird’s eye view of the action.

There is not one wasted shot in this arty film, nor one that is not a design student's delight... [the camera] gets down on the floor and shows us the dust swirling around a pair of boots and under a door.

The pace can at times be a touch slow, but it's easy to see why the Coens allow certain scenes to simmer, especially when their actors are chewing up the screen as they do.
