Originally part of the successful Saturday night lineup that included THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, and ALL IN THE FAMILY, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW centered on Chicago-based psychiatrist Dr. Robert Hartley (Newhart) and his schoolteacher wife, Emily (Suzanne Pleshette, THE BIRDS). Neighbor Howard Borden (Bill Daily, I DREAM OF JEANNIE) is a divorced pilot, while Bob's old buddy Jerry (Peter Bonerz, FRIENDS) works down the hall from him as an orthodontist. Bob and Jerry's quirky receptionist was Carol Kester (Marcia Wallace), who hosted a long list of even quirkier patients. In the second season, Bob gets an inferiority complex in the shadow of Emily's dad, the Hartleys undergo couples' therapy with disastrous results, Carole pursues a budding romance, and Howard falls for Bob's engaged sister.
