Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket to Join the Criterion Collection
You're gonna see a side of Dignan that you haven't seen before.

A decade after attaining cult classic status, Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket is getting the deluxe DVD treatment.

In a report posted by MTV Movies yesterday, the director was quoted as saying fans of his first film will soon be able to see an expanded version:

"We've just begun work with the Criterion Collection to do 'Bottle Rocket' on a new DVD that's going to have all kinds of stuff. There's a lot of 'Bottle Rocket' that was on the cutting room floor, so we have a lot to work with on that one."

Bottle Rocket has long divided critics -- Roger Ebert called it "unwound and indulgent," and The San Francisco Chronicle's Mick LaSalle referred to it as a "grueling, numbing black hole" -- but the movie has plenty of passionate fans who have complained about what MTV Movies summed up as "the crappy treatment [it] has received on DVD."

The report gives no word on a release date for the Criterion reissue, and it isn't available for pre-order at Amazon yet, so it's presumably a ways off -- but this should still be good news for Anderson fans.

Thank God. I always wondered why this one got the Criterion shaft.

Does Wes Anderson have compromising pictures of execs at Criterion? Not everything he does is worthy of their catalogue (though Michael Bay somehow got them to put out The Rock & Armageddon!) The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou didn't excite critics like Rushmore & Royal Tennebaums, but somehow got the release. Bottle Rocket is a weird little comedy with Owen Wilson in a bad haircut; nothing more. The version we saw on video & DVD was the one that was in theatres, right? Eleven years later, it's now going to be better?

I actually think The Life Aquatic is his best movie. And I think all his movies deserve Criterion releases. They're the epitomy of dry American comedy, much like how Armageddon and The Rock are the epitomies of the mindless, idiotic American action film. That's why they get put on there.
