Angelina Jolie Set to Star as Real-Life Spy

Paramount seeking Bourne Identity vibe.

Angelina Jolie is readying a return to the spy thriller genre -- with a twist.

Variety reports that Jolie has been tabbed by Paramount to star in a film about the life of Kathi Lynn Austin, an intelligence operative whose story was recently sold to the studio. From the article:

Austin, who has most recently worked on contract for the U.N. Security Council, has undertaken field missions in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and Central America. The drama will focus on a fictional arms dealer inspired by Victor Bout, the shadowy Russian who is considered one of the world's most prolific dealers in illegal munitions.

Variety describes the project as being "similar in spirit to The Bourne Identity." The studio is said to have a list of potential screenwriters; negotiations will begin after the strike. Meanwhile, Austin is set to writer her memoirs, and her representatives are about to begin looking for bids from potential publishers.

Big question. Why is this woman still getting to star in movies? From my account, almost every movie that is starring her has flopped (except the first laura croft)and hollywood still thinks she is bankable.

Uh, Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a big success (clearly an impetus for this role). She's currently "in" Beowulf, which is doing about as well as could be expected. And those are the biggest leading roles she's had since Lara Croft. Most of her flops (Sky Captain) can't really be blamed on her. So... yeah. She's not exactly box office gold, and I'm not saying she's a great actress either, but so far she's done nothing to disappoint the moneymen.

If you doubt her acting abilities, watch Girl, Interrupted.

she just needs to pick better roles. Oh and also she needs to avoid using that same accent she uses in: Beowulf, Alexander, tomb raider, mighty heart etc...

Her acting in Girl, Interrupted was mediocre at best.

If she uses that awful accent again in another movie (a choppy mix of persian/latvian/????whatever) I will light my ears on fire until they melt down my neck.

I'm not entirely sure what the point is of putting a real life spy against a fictional villain.
