Critic Consensus: No consensus yet.
Boys of the City was the first official entry in Monogram's profitable "East Side Kids" series (its predecessor, 1940's East Side Kids, bears little if any relationship on the series or its characters). After causing all sorts of trouble on their own turf, the Kids-Mugs (Leo Gorcey), Danny (Bobby Jordan), Scurno ("Sunshine Sammy" Morrison), Peewee (David Gorcey), Skinny (Donald Haines), Johnny (Hally Chester), Pete (Frankie Burke) and Algy (Eugene Francis)-are shipped off to a camp in the Adirondacks. Their arrival coincides with that of Judge Malcolm Parker (Forrest Taylor), who finds it expedient to retreat to his mountain mansion when his life is threatened by mobsters. Befriending the kids, Parker invites them to spend the night in his mansion. Shortly afterward, the judge is murdered, and the only witness to the crime, heroine Louise (Inna Gest), is kidnapped. Louise's ex-con boyfriend Knuckles (Dave O'Brien) is accused of the murder, but with the help of the East Side Kids he proves his innocence and traps the genuine killer. Boys of the City benefits from the dextrous direction of cult favorite Joseph H. Lewis, who breathes all manner of nuances into the film's traditional "old dark house" trappings. … More
