When Guy (Richard Burton), a city doctor, returns to his hometown at the request of Larry (Tom Drake), his close boyhood friend dying of Hodgkin's disease, he becomes embroiled in a tragic love affair. As Guy begins to treat Larry, he falls in love with Larry's doting wife, Margaret (Barbara Rush), who is heartbroken at the impending loss of her husband. Unable to resist temptation, Guy and Margaret share one night of guilty passion as Larry lies dying. Realizing that he cannot save Larry and not willing to watch him go through unnecessary pain, Guy gives him an overdose of morphine and is subsequently brought to trial for mercy killing. Amid the buried secrets of Guy's past and the seedy private lives of the local denizens of East Dereham, the trial rages on, threatening to ruin Guy's career forever unless Margaret can prove that Guy did the right thing.
