Avant-garde to the last shuttering edit, Guy Maddin's signature aesthetic is also, paradoxically enough, a classical fusion of style and content.

Emotional yet thoughtful and infused with surrealist touches, the film offers an original and somewhat horrific view on the experience--the aching delicateness--of growing up. Through his unconventionally autobiographical, transcendently un-gimmicky methods, Maddin once again cuts to the core of emotional truth. The film exists in several presentations, including its original silent format as well as with several voice-over narrations from such talents as Isabella Rosselini and poet John Ashbury. [More]

Reviews for Brand Upon The Brain!
Brand Upon the Brain! is a baroque entertainment with one foot in silent cinema and the other gingerly toeing the sound waves.
Uniquely warped Canadian cult filmmaker Guy Maddin's gleefully perverse exploration of feverish childhood terrors is audacious, hypnotic and utterly breathtaking, a near-silent film, almost entirely a black-and-white mosaic of starkly striking images.
A drolly phantasmagoric, silent-film spectacle in which Freud meets Feuillade and Frankenstein! Not to discredit its wild artistry by saying the gimmick's the prize, but... the gimmick's the prize.
A typically frenetic, Maddin-esque amalgam of the autobiographical, Freudian and willfully absurd.
Maddin has created a world of pure imagination -- a fairy tale with the darkness and light of youth and the hopes and fears of adulthood.
The inimitable Guy Maddin outdoes himself with psyche-probing silent film.
