Saying that Brave is entertaining but not astonishing is pretty much admitting your straight-A student got a B.
Nice way to put it, to some critics however it's either perfection or bust which is unfair and unrealistic.

Given how much crap the studios are putting out, I see nothing wrong with the public and critics having much higher expectations and standards for one studio that has proven it is capable of producing movies that aren't safe, and easy.
Saying Brave is good, but a disappointment with it's handling of it's first female lead as another product for the Disney Princess Merchandise Machine in an easy story with one-dimensional characters isn't asking too much of Pixar, because it's consistantly done so much better before.

I understand having a tougher criteria and there being a higher level of scrutiny, but as I said in another review, a film can not meet expectations and still be good enough to warrant a fresh rating.
I saw Brave and didn't believe that the characters were one dimensional at all, also while the story was admittedly lesser than Pixar's usual standard it was well told and entertaining imo.

Agree. Saying that the movie is disappointing only because the studio is capable of more is fine as a review note, but also giving it the same score, or lower, than a worse movie would recieve is doing a disservice to your readers.
A rating is for letting your readers how good they can expect the movie to be, not how much you are looking down on the studio that made it this time around.

I think you have the best description of what I felt about the movie!

Falls far short of Shrek, Alladin and other notables. Just really not funny. Animation was great, plot was iffy. Characters were fun.

That's a clever way of saying you weren't impressed but you're going to praise the movie anyway.
