Winner of nine David di Donatello Awards among numerous other international prizes, BREAD AND TULIPS is a charming romantic comedy from director Silvio Soldini. Licia Maglietta is simply magnificent as Rosalba, a fortyish married woman who is abandoned at a rest stop during a family bus trip. Suddenly feeling that something is missing from her life, she hitches her way toward Venice, calling her husband--bathroom fixture salesman, Mimmo--only occasionally to tell him that she is taking her own short vacation and that he will have to take care of the house and their two teenage sons. But a day or so stretches into a longer period of time as Rosalba finds herself making a new group of friends, getting a job, and beginning to care for an oddly appealing--and suicidal--waiter. The great Bruno Ganz is terrific as the fatalistic Icelandic waiter who speaks softly and carefully, stringing together multisyllabic, unusual words that often leave other characters scratching their heads while the audience laughs. The film features an outstanding supporting cast, including Felice Andreasi as an aging anarchist florist who likes to yell at customers, Giuseppe Battiston as a detective-story-reading plumber, Marina Massironi as a flippy holistic beautician masseuse, and Daniela Piperno as a wacky free spirit who changes Rosalba's life. Offers a delightful fairy-tale solution for those feeling trapped in a pre-assigned role, a momentary escape into the imagination.

An unsurprising and leaden effort that doesn't even show off the beauty of this wondrous setting.

Soldini's movie gets away with more than it should on warmth alone -- most of it emanating from Licia Maglietta.

It's all very sweet, but the film goes in too many directions.

An endearing romantic daydream, but misses the bus where matters of reality are concerned.

Maglietta gives a wonderful performance as a vibrant woman emerging from a cocoon of suburban malaise.

Though there's no denying that Bread and Tulips is just a feel-good movie, it is a delightfully executed, simple, and unassuming film...

We've seen this film way too many times in countless permutations, and its lack of originality is injured by the general poorness of the direction.

Fun and romantic, with beautiful scenery and characters whose lives we'd like to live if we had the nerve... or if our passports weren't missing.

As a charmer the movie is not a klutz. Some mild excesses of whimsy are to be forgiven, even savored, like nibbling a few extra olives on your plate of antipasti.
