Solid performances from the likes of Josephine Byrnes (as chief protagonist Diane/Sister Catherine), Sandy Gore, Lisa Hensley, Naomi Watts, Kym Wilson and Simon Burke keep the proceedings captivating, but it's Brenda Fricker who shines with an incredibly stunning turn as Sister Agnes, seen by the students of the convent as their nemesis but is able to convey herself as a servant of God with so much integrity.
There are numerous highlights (of particular interest is the ritual that depicts the young women wedding Christ) but the miniseries becomes surprisingly sluggish as it progresses; Sister Paul's departure from the convent doesn't compel as one would hope, despite strong performances from Hensley and, as her cynical beau, Burke.
In all, 'Brides of Christ' has a lot to say about the Catholic Church, its representatives and their relevance to modern society. An outstanding accomplishment that shouldn't be missed.
