Synopsis: In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire... In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething "singleton" (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight, and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones. The movie is often clunkily paced and edited.

Its cast sparkles, much of it is genuinely hilarious and it communicates its heroine's emotional panic with precision, wit and style.

Fun, charming and exuding the similar feel and aura that made Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral so popular.

Zips along at a laugh-a-minute pace and fully involves the viewer in Bridget's little slice of life.

The script is teasingly, pleasingly raunchy in places.

Moves along with a confident laugh track sensibility and is always innocuously likable if somewhat imperfect -- a lot like Bridget herself.

Achieves the rare feat of being both old-fashioned and post-modern and still finding a way toward a happy ending.

It almost kicks the atypical chick flick onto its Oprah-sized backside.

The thrust of the story is how miserable it is being a single young woman while still making it look like a lark.

Warm and charming and often witty, it's as good a romantic comedy as has come out for some time.

It's glib when it should be witty, flat in situations demanding heels and wants us to believe that an actress celebrated for her beauty would perceive herself as unappealing.

As good as Zellweger is, she's very nearly upstaged by Grant, who sends up his previous, charm-filled movie characters quite convincingly.
