Synopsis: In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire... In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething "singleton" (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight, and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones. Good actors can't make the soundtrack stop blaring Motown hits that are supposed to stand in for actual human emotion.

Helen Fielding, Andrew Davies and Richard Curtis' script is really funny and Zellweger gives her best performance ever.

One imagines Bridget Jones attending the film and then writing about it later in her diary, and the likelihood of her savaging the evening seems high.

What we have here are three hilarious performances embedded in a humdrum context, which is more than one can say about most romantic comedies.

I'm ... impressed by [Zellweger's] impersonation of ordinariness, especially after seeing her looking so slinky-glam in her lemon-drop gown on Oscar night.

The urge to laugh is superceded by the urge to slap everybody and command them to stop embarrassing all of humanity.

Zellweger is, in fact, thoroughly charming and believably British in the role.

Maguire's brisk pacing and Zellweger's spunk, especially, give Bridget endearing appeal.

Zellweger gives this Bridget Jones an absolutely empathetic familiarity that makes the movie feel like an entertaining anthem for the frustratingly forlorn.

For the most part, novice feature director Sharon Maguire manages to recapture the outrageous situations and the attitudes in the book.

Badly miscast as the British heroine, Zellweger, in a monotonic performance, never gives us much reason to care.

The three-act structure is too predictable, and at 90 minutes, feels both draggy and hacked to the bone.

Zellweger is so likeable and fun to watch, it doesn't matter what happens in the film.
