Edward Burns' Comic Book to (Also) Become a Movie
"Dock Walloper!"
by Scott Weinberg | July 27, 2007
Discuss Article
Guy Ritchie's Gamekeeper just became the first Virgin Comics book to earn a movie deal. And it looks like Ed Burns' Dock Walloper is about to be the second.

Actually, Rosario Dawson's Occult Crime Taskforce also got a deal with Dimension, so expect a whole bunch of celebrity-backed comic books to become movies some time soon. Co-written by Burns and Jimmy Palmiotti, the story is "a stylized gangster tale set in the 1920s, where Prohibition has created a struggle to control the criminal underworld."

According to Variety, Mr. Burns (no, not that Mr. Burns) plans to recreate the era by using lots of green-screens. Just like they did with Sin City and 300. The writer/director will play a gangster in the film, but he'll also be casting for a few stars too. Although it doesn't sound like a "traditional" comic book movie, this should make for an interesting experiment. Edward Burns is generally known for chat-heavy indie flicks like She's the One and The Brothers McMullen.

But hey, you gotta love a title like "Dock Walloper."

Should we be worried about another Madonna movie?

I wonder if Guy Ritchie has become a good director in his absence?

I'm really curious as to how this will turn out, I like Burns and this is unlike anything he's ever directed. Plus it sounds pretty good, I usualy like gangster films.

Comic book movies are big.

Directors/Actors want their pet projects to be made.

Directors/Actors decide to make poorly made/recieved comic book.

Producers see it's a comic book, think big money, decide to produce movie.

I'm not saying it isn't a briliant way to get around the stupidity that is a producer's mindset in making a movie, it just doesn't mean that these will be good movies. Neither does it mean that fanboys are actually going to care, nor turn out in droves to support these movies. I mean, dang, I like Ed Burns but that sounds like a rip-off of a rip-off.

Is anyone actually buying these 'celebrity' comic books?!!
