Consensus: Though you can guess the outcome of Brown Sugar at the beginning, Lathan and Diggs imbue this romantic comedy with a lot of charm.

Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan), best friends since elementary school, have been in love with rap music since they can remember. It has even carried through into their adult lives. Dre is making a successful living as a record executive, while Sidney has just taken over as editor-in-chief at one of the hip-hop community's most popular magazines. Somehow, romance has never been an issue between the two, until they both find new loves of their own--for Dre, it's the beautiful Reese (Nicole Ari Parker), for Sidney, it's basketball star Kelby (Boris Kodjoe). Disillusioned with the lackluster music that his label continually puts out, Dre decides to branch out on his own. Sidney gives him a loan to support his bold new venture, but it is this unflinching support that eventually begins to grate on Reese and Kelby, forcing Dre and Sidney to confront their true feelings. Famuyiwa's crowd-pleasing film is boosted by Mos Def and Queen Latifah's hysterical supporting performances. [More]

Reviews for Brown Sugar
Brown Sugar takes an old tale and tells it in a fresh, modern way. The music's pretty good, too.
It's predictable, but it jumps through the expected hoops with style and even some depth.
"Brown Sugar" admirably aspires to be more than another "Best Man" clone by weaving a theme throughout this funny film.
Too much about Brown Sugar is carried out with utmost decorum, as if writer-director Rick Famuyiwa were bringing hip-hop home to meet the parents.
Most of it feels fresh, and the writers incorporate hip-hop in a way I haven't seen in a narrative.
A romantic comedy, yes, but one with characters who think and talk about their goals, and are working on hard decisions.
While it's genuinely cool to hear characters talk about early rap records (Sugar Hill Gang, etc.), the constant referencing of hip-hop arcana can alienate even the savviest audiences.
Stereotypes are eschewed in favor of well-drawn characters, and the hip-hop backdrop is integral to the story rather than a marketing scheme to sell the soundtrack.
Hip-hop rarely comes alive as its own fire-breathing entity in this picture.
What really breaks this movie out of the romantic-comedy rut is the setting in which it's told.
There are times when you wish that the movie had worked a little harder to conceal its contrivances, but Brown Sugar turns out to be a sweet and enjoyable fantasy.
Little more than a knock-off of both When Harry Met Sally and Love & Basketball -- and a rather lethargic one at that.
People are unlikely to leave Brown Sugar with the words 'original' or 'surprising' on their lips, but they are likely to leave with a good-sized smile.
