Steve Carell's "Evan Almighty" -- At $225M, An Unholy Mess?
by RT Staff | October 10, 2006
Discuss Article
Few doubt that Steve Carell is an outsized comic talent. But the Los Angeles Times is suggesting that his current project, "Evan Almighty," is getting a reputation for its outsized budget, one that could ultimately run as high as $225 million, which would make it the costliest comedy of all time.

The film, a sequel to 2003's "Bruce Almighty" starring Jim Carrey, tells the story of a congressman ordered by the Lord to load up a giant craft ship full of animals, a la Noah. Unfortunately, like Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, it can be a volatile situation on a movie set when two conflicting species attempt to interact; as the Times puts it, "Predatory creatures such as lions and tigers cannot be shot with monkeys and giraffes. Filmmakers must abide by numerous regulations regarding the treatment of animals, and even the best-trained animals do not always follow orders. Sometimes a color or a scent can throw off an animal, delaying filming."

Well, at least they're not spending money on barbers....

In addition, limited preparation time, bad weather, and unexpected costs for visual effects have created increases in the budget well beyond the original $140 million estimate. The Times notes that the track record for big-budget comedies is decidedly mixed; although "Men in Black II," which cost $175 million, was a hit, "Wild Wild West" ($170 million) was a bomb.

Still, the studio isn't panicking, at least in public.

"This movie is a great bet," Universal Chairman Marc Shmuger told the Times. "It's a spectacle fantasy and also a comedy. And a sequel to one of the most successful hits in the studio's history."

Or, as studio co-Chairman David Linde told the paper, "It's based on two story sources: 'Bruce Almighty' and the Bible, both of which were incredibly successful."

Everyone keep in mind that all three LotR films were 300 million all togther. So this movie is 2 1/4xs the expense it took to make the Fellowship.

It's Steve Carrell. Did you see the numbers for Little Miss Sunshine? And that was an indie film. This'll do quite the money.

Carell is both extremely popular and acclaimed at the moment, so it'll bring green.

But 225 is absolutely absurd.

They're certainly not paying it to the extras. Usually extras get payed a little bit of cash, but they came to my town and wanted people to work early in the morning and into the night for nothing. They said that it was generous of them to allow us to take part in the making of such an amazing film. I left (laughing my ass off) when this lady on their staff told me it was a privelege to be in a film as high caliber as Evan Almighty.

225 million
First thing I have to say is that I do not give a shit about how much this movies cost because I am going to pay the exact same money to see it theaters as other movies.
Second thing is what happened to the cost of movies. When T2 came out, every body was wowing because it was a 100 million dollar movie. Now an eight million dollar movie, like SWAT, is consider a B film and it does look like a B film to me. Then fucken Cameron made Titanic and that was a 200 million dollar movie and he was betting his career on the movie because of the cost. Now after the movie came out, audience felt in love with the movie and every penny was spent of the movie screen. Right now, even a stupid little comedy costs 225 million. Wholly shit, they must spent some major money to create the CGI animals.
Some one mention the LOTR was only like 300 million and made 1 billion all together. Man those three fucken movies seem like a bargain comparing to this whole Evan Almighty movie. They better show where they spent the money or some accountant might get the pink slip.

Well, spending that kind of cash on a movie guarantees it will either make or break someones career. It's not likely going to just break even.

I think Steve Carell is hilarious, if this movie tanks I hope that it doesn't drag him down with it.

hmmmm
i had high hopes for bruce almighty and was severely let down so i hope this one isnt the same.
And to the person who said

no, he is the same character

er....no its a different character - i think the name of the film gives that away! (unless your talking about morgan who is playing the same character).

This has the promise and potential to be good but im not sure if it will justify its 225 price tag - i will see it but as i work at a cinema head office i dont have to pay!!!!!

Someone needs to figure out what he's talking about before speaking...

In Bruce Almighty, Steve Carell played a character named Evan.

In Evan Almighty, Steve Carell is playing a character named Evan.

According to the laws of transitivity, Steve Carell is playing the same character.

Anyway, back on topic... I thought Bruce Almighty was great and the concept behind Evan Almighty seems the best an inevitable sequel could be. Plus Steve Carell is awesome. In other words, I have hopes. If anything, the studio is at least being unoriginal in an original way. Plus $225 million... who cares, its not like the ticket price will be any higher. And with DVD sales I'm pretty sure it'll turn up a profit.

Evan does equal Evan
In Bruce Almighty, Evan was a new anchor. In this, he is a congressman. Same character? According to IMDB and www.The-numebrs.com Steve is playing Evan Baxter in Evan Almighty. That was his name in Bruce Almighty. In my book, that is case closed. As for the $225 million price tag, shame on them. They aren't going to get close. 40 Year Old Virgin barely broke $100. I highly doubt that this will break $225. I wouldn't stake my career on it, but oh well.

Bruce Almight might have been a hit ( saw it in the theatre) but I dont think it was a highly regarded film or really very funny.
Its odd the only thing I remember of the movie is the dog on the toilet.

Remember, the 40-Year-Old Virgin was rated R. Evan Almighty will be rated PG. PG movies have statistically higher box office grosses than R-rated films. The RT story is a little misleading; the Times article said that the movie's production budget could go up to $175-180 million, and the marketing budget would bring it up to $225-250 million. With an aggressive marketing campaign like that, every little kid in the country will see previews on his favorite Saturday morning cartoon, and he'll beg his parents to take him to Evan Almighty.

= Evan Almighty at least breaks even. I'll be seeing it, at least.

What???

Is this movie going to have an asteroid destroy Paris causing a tidal wave to wipe out the Autobots and a battle with 100,000 orcs attacking the Scots at Stirling? The cost sounds ludicrous!

That's a shit load of money for a comedy no less. I do want to see it. I thought the first one was good, I love Carrey so it sucks that he's not in this, but Carell, Freeman, and Goodman are cool. But it'll make profit if you take into account it's world wide gross, Bruce made some where around 500 mil.

i love steve carrell, but a bruce almighty sequel is just a bad idea. with all these budget enhancements, it's going to make little to no profit.
