Critics Consensus: Bruno is Certified Fresh
by Tim Ryan | July 09, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

This week at the movies, we've got Austrian audacity (Bruno, starring Sacha Baron Cohen) and graduation gratification (I Love You, Beth Cooper, starring Hayden Panettiere and Paul Rust). What do the critics have to say? Sacha Baron Cohen has become one of cinema's most daring provocateurs - and astute social critics. Critics say his latest vehicle, Bruno, is at once laugh-out-loud funny, teeth-grittingly awkward, and disarmingly intelligent - though it's a few notches below his last gonzo doc, Borat. I Love You, Beth Cooper attempts the same high-wire act as many wild teen comedies - it promises raunchy laughs, but also tries to something to say about the teenage condition. Unfortunately, the pundits say Beth Cooper fails on both levels. Back to Article

Armond White giving Bruno a rotten review made me realize I should go see it ASAP. Beth Cooper looked like crap from the first time I saw the trailer.

I might be in the minority here, but I actually love Sacha Baren Cohen, and I think he is one of the better comedians working today. I can understand why people got sick of him, Borat was like the most quoted movie of '08, but still, that didn't stop Borat from being one of the best comedies to come out in a long time. Not all of us are content to watch Wil Ferrel do his eternal man-child schtick for the umpteenth time.

Sacha Baron Cohen is the Monty Python of today. That's obvouisly a good thing.

Madonna has 'v one,
Angelina has 'v one,
now Bruno has 'v one!

They should make a Ali G film. A real Ali G film, the other didn't count.

Can't wait to see Bruno. Sacha Baron Cohen is hilarious and he is always fun to watch cause you never know what he's going to do next. I Love You Beth Cooper doesn't look good at all so I think I will be skipping that one. Also I'm glad The Hurt Locker is expanding this weekend so now I can finally see it.

I'm definitely looking forward to "Bruno." As the vehicle for Cohen's third character from his HBO series, I'm sure this movie will deliver all the laughs and not-so-subtle social commentary that did its predecessor. Wassup?

SACHA BARON COHEN IS THE BEST COMIC OF ITS GENERATION AND I WOULD BE SURPIRSED IF YOU WERE NOT OFFENDED BY ITS MOVIE BORAT . BUT YOU CAN LEAVE WITH THE LACK OF IMAGINATION OF STILLER AND OF THE BUFFONERY OF FERREL. ANYWAY YOU SHOULD REALLY SEE LAKE TAHOE IT ALREADY OPENED IN MEXICO AND IT IS VERY TOUCHING (ALSO SEE BRUNO OF COURSE)

I'm definitely seeing Bruno, if there's one movie that can be anywhere near as hilarious as The Hangover, this looks like it could be the one. I don't know why something's driving me to see Beth Cooper, yes it doesn't look great but I have a slight feeling to see it, maybe at the discount theatre around the corner. And I'll be checking out the indie Humpday, which I've heard great things about. Can't wait for HP6 in a few days, but 2 weeks for IMAX release

How can you complain about Will Ferrel being a one trick pony when that is all that Sacha Cohen is? He is an unfunny one trick pony, he is a Tom Green ripoff. And to the person who compared him to Monty Python, you need to be taken to the center of a big city and flogged for being a dumbass. Monty Python was funny, they were smart, and they were talented. Cohen is a dumbass, he is not funny and he is not smart. This movie is nothing compared to the genius that was The Hangover.

yet you're talking about him and reading a story related to him. That's all Sacha needs to say his work is done. He's not interested in having you laughing at the fact he's a grown dude acting like a stupid child (Ferrel), he wants to have people thinking and mainly talking about him...

to me it's like social comedy, but that's just my opinion anyway

here's the plan: friend and I get dressed up in 'high fashion', drink 2 martinis each and go to Bruno. I think it's probably the best way to see this film, esp in small town midwest flat state. I never got around to seeing Borat (#45 in my Netflix cue), but Bruno's gotten good reviews by smart people.

Calling "Blood the Last Vampire" an anime classic is a bit of a stretch. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but it was 45 minutes long and had no character development and terrible dialog. Seriously, if you're going to adapt anime into live action movie, pick some better material to base it on. (Still crossing my fingers that Keanu Reeves won't ruin the "Cowboy Bebop" adaptation)

Chris Columbus just doesnt know how to follow up Potter. i prefer him doing movies like StepMom or Bicentenial, but why Beth Cooper. surely he knows that there is absolutely no way he can make a very good teen movie out of non-rated film... Columbus is a well known establish director, why would he make a film like this?

ps. Hayden is so hot even though obviously there is something off with her body. but still, i'd **** her in anytime of the week.

Farrell and Stiller are unfunny escapees from "Saturday Night Live". Cohen is just a fouler version of those two. Very little of what they do is funny unless you are between the ages of 15 and 30. The same goes for most of what Judd Apatow does, just foul and outrageous sex jokes. And THAT passes for comedy? Sheesh!

Firstly, let me say how much I value all of your opinions. This is a diverse planet, with diverse cultures, and diverse opinions. And we should be free to express them. Even free to be bigots, like BennyJet. Bruno is a splendid example of how one stereotype is used to draw humour out of a range of other stereotypes. While the subject matter might be exploitive, to a degree, it also serves to highlight our basic humanity, and the foibles we have.

Guys, I love all of you, and I do believe in fairies, I do, I do.

Bunch of crap movies for this week, seems like they're for the youngsters.
The Euro-Tom Green, Hayden playing a cheerleader.. again?!(though she's still lovely!) and Blood which I was hoping to be decent but oh well; hopefully Ninja Assassin will be good.
Can't wait for the Half-Blood Prince next week though.

At least we are getting Moon here (finally), though it sucks it's in our worst theater here (Memphis) that has no DLP Projectors or comfy seats and it's older than me I think. Yet it's the same price to get in as compared to our 16 screen gem that has all DLP's and stadium seats... DAMN BASTERDS!

So what you all think, is Moon worth it ($7.50 mat./$9.50 night) to go to the hole in the wall theater?

I think people who don't like Borat and Bruno watch them the wrong way... I think Cohen is alright (no more or less funny than any of the other over paid comedians in Hollywood,) but I just love the reactions of the unknowing people that he catches on film. What other choices do you have for movies this weekend anyway? You can watch robots roll around again for 2 and a half hours, or get motion sickness from watching the camera man in Public Enemies try to film the actors...

There are more laughs in Bruno than every piece of crap comedy Apatow has made put together. It's hilarious. The only thing I didn't really like is that there are a couple of scenes with just plain nasty, unnecessary nudity. One is a clip of what is supposed to be Bruno's **** and another scene with some ugly chick with gross looking oversized fake tits.

This movie in no way deserved the monetary resources that were poured into its advertising or making. If I want to see this character I can turn on the TV, were Bruno needed to stay. The reason that Borat was a hit, is that the character is "believable"idiocy and had an actual storyline in the film. Bruno is a one note character, that albeit hilarious on the small screen, does not translate into a feature length film. Who are these reviewers that compile a 69% "guaranteed fresh" rating? Are you out of your minds? Did you actually watch the film???
