The Buddy System (1983)
One of the least known of Richard Dreyfuss' post-Oscar projects, he plays an unsuccessful author who pays the bills by working as a public school security guard. Susan Sarandon is a single mother who must find a job or she might lose custody of her young son Wil Wheaton. Both Dreyfuss and Wheaton are stuck in dead-in romantic affairs with other people. Wheaton befriends Dreyfuss and determines that the erstwhile author will make a perfect mate for his mom. It's Goodbye Girl in suburbia for the most part, but Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon work very well together--once the machinations of the script allow them to get together. … More
