Preminger's well-constructed and suspenseful film in the Hitchcock tradition is worth watching for the performances, but alas the conclusion comes as something of a let down.

This classic psychological thriller from Otto Preminger (BONJOUR TRISTESSE, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM) stars Carol Lynley as Ann Lake, a single mom who has just moved to London with her young daughter, Bunny. When she arrives to pick Bunny up from nursery school, she finds that her daughter has vanished without a trace. All record of her daughter's existence has been erased, and the police are soon convinced that Bunny was a figment of her mother's feminine imagination. Ann's brother corroborates this hypothesis, and soon the frantic mother is left to her own devices in the search for a daughter in whose existence only she believes. Laurence Olivier turns in a stellar performance as the police chief, and the supporting cast includes Noel Coward (THE ITALIAN JOB) and Keir Dullea (2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY). Moodily atmospheric in black and white, a surreal pitch is achieved in the film's depiction of the dark underbelly of London and the eccentric characters who populate it. [More]

Reviews for Bunny Lake is Missing
Olivier is excellent as the analytical inspector, his easy-going grace a delightful contrast to the two stars.
As disturbing as he's supposed to be, Wilson is also the film's uncanniest highlight.
Artfully directed, professionally performed and just twisty enough to make viewers get lost in the overtly Hitchcockian trappings...
Somehow the unconvincing story is engrossing, as the marvelous supporting cast put it over... .
