Consensus: The Business of Strangers showcases a complex, compelling performance by Channing. Her interactions and clashes with Stiles make for riveting viewing.

At an out-of-town business presentation, her assistant Paula (Julia Stiles) arrives forty-five minutes late, and, in a fit of rage, Julie fires her on the spot. That afternoon, the CEO of Julie's company informs her that she's been promoted--she'll be taking his position. In the mood to celebrate, Julie heads to the hotel bar where, to her surprise, she encounters Paula. Julie wants to make amends; Paula is cool but willing. The two hit it off and spend the rest of the evening palling around the hotel. When Julie's headhunter Nick (Frederick Weller) shows up unexpectedly, things get interesting. Paula tells Julie that he raped her friend in Boston and so the two plot revenge to teach him a lesson. The rest is a study in debauchery that leaves Julie unsure of herself. Stiles and Channing play smoothly off each other, slowly tightening the screws to win control. The outward coolness of the characters is reflected in the even tracking shots, but the tension between them is reflected in the mise-en-scene, becoming more cramped and claustrophobic as the picture unfolds. Reviews for The Business of Strangers
May be a hermetically sealed experience, but it is also a brilliantly integrated one.
Channing, of course and as usual, commands the screen with a dynamic yet controlled fury that keeps you riveted on her every second the camera shows her face.
The core pleasure of the film is the complex and precise performance by the underrated talent Channing.
This is an impressive debut for Stettner and an even more impressive showcase for Channing and Stiles.
Somewhat unsatisfying -- the flick poses more questions than it answers -- but the strong performances make it worth a look.
Leaves you with plenty to think about regarding the demands society places on working women, and the scorn they face when they choose career over family.
Stiles's character is finally too opaque, and the mind games she plays on Channing aren't clever or cruel enough to produce a satisfying denouement.
Intelligently addresses provocative issues... with two electrifying actresses.
Feels contrived despite the worthy contributions of Channing and Stiles.
A consistently intriguing, if not completely satisfying, portrait of sexual politics inside and beyond the boardroom...worth searching out.
It has almost nothing to do with women; it's about men's fantasies of women.
It's all a tour de force for Channing, who hasn't had a movie role this meaty in years.
It is involving less because of the sexual winkery and neo-Mamet dialogue, but because Channing and Stiles are expert at verbal drilling and insinuation.
A movie that feels throughout like a stage play underimagined in its transfer to film.
Countless films attempt to explicate the feelings of women working in a male-dominated corporate world, but few have cut so much to the bone as Patrick Stettner's The Business of Strangers.
