The title suggests closure, yet the film locates a nation very much still in the process of getting to know itself.

It is the story of the Carnival Rolidei, a traveling band of gypsies/circus performers who travel from town to backwoods town in Brazil, providing the locals with the exotica of both contact with the outside world as well as entertainment. In the beginning of the film, we see the Carnival and its performers completely captivating its audience, and there is a feel of magical realism as the villagers lose themselves in the cheap traveling production. However, as the troupe travels on, they encounter some competition: in one village it is a television, in another it is a movie projector, both of which captivate their respective audiences far more easily than Carnival Rolidei could. As the troupe continues its travels, we learn more and more about the growing industrialization of Brazil, and we realize that performers like the Carnival Rolidei are becoming obsolete. They know it too; in Sao Paulo the leader of the troupe degenerates into a pimp because it is the only way to make money in the city. Movies that aspire to the level of observation that this one does are rarely as hilarious and fun as BYE BYE BRAZIL. [More]
