Annie (Julie Walters) and Chris (Helen Mirren), of bucolic Yorkshire, belong to the Women's Institute (WI), which preserves traditional homemaking practices. While they're just as dedicated as the other ladies in the group, Annie and Chris are adventurous personalities, and they poke fun at the WI's tedious lectures on broccoli and fabrics. In an effort to raise money for the local hospital while also spicing things up at the WI, the ladies decide to put a new spin on the WI calendar, which usually depicts landscapes or churches. The women will pose nude for the calendar while performing traditional activities like baking and gardening. It's no surprise that the finished calendar is a wild success, bringing the ladies instant notoriety and adoration. Stellar talent carries the story, especially from glorious Mirren, who portrays yet another daring female character, as she did in past films like THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE, AND HER LOVER. Staying true to the real-life story, the film closely matches the original calendar photos, and provides a funny, touching, uplifting tale. [More]

Reviews for Calendar Girls
It's lovely and entertaining, the type of British film which makes you wonder why the simplicity of the human condition continually evades the grasp of Hollywood.
It’s all more bittersweet and tangier than you’d expect, saturated with a bracing Yorkshire humor...
A decent movie whose few failings are made obvious in a field of quality pre-Oscar releases.
It's funny, inspirational, and entertaining - there's never been a more empowering 'girlie' calendar .
A movie that washes down without much thinking or introspection, provides some laughs and a tear or two, and dishes up a little something to mull over with its messages about friendship and loyalty in the face of naked ambition.
Helen Mirren stars in yet another professionally acted and staged wry-crisp comedy about British modesty that gets its laughs, but seems increasingly out of date.
Even as the rest of the movie begins to go south, you can still count on Helen Mirren hitting us with those perfectly sardonic line deliveries.
The cardboard cutout characters and typical jokes are aimed toward 50+ women and people who laugh out loud at the hysterically unfunny Will & Grace.
Moderately pleasurable, largely because of its large, exuberant ensemble cast and its understated British humor.
Don't race to see it unless a female Full Monty is just what you've been waiting for.
It reels us in because it is about people who for so long have paid lip service to making a difference that they are profoundly altered when they actually do.
What Calendar Girls gives us is all a bit too thin for a feature film. Or even jam.
The real-life calendar girls were actual human beings, and here they're merely comic patsies.
