Cannes 2008: Point Breaking News - A Sequel in the Works

Director de Bont set for surf sequel.

Following the announcement, a full year ago, that an Asian-themed sequel to 1991 action flick Point Break was in the works, news coming out of Cannes today suggests the film now has a director and title. According to Variety, Jan de Bont (Speed, Twister) will be on helming duties, while the film will be called Point Break Indo, to fit in with the film's Southeast Asian setting. Producers RGM Entertainment also announced that "several major stars" had been approached to appear, although there was no word if original stars Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves would return. "This is exactly the kind of movie RGM was set up to produce: Asian-themed stories for a global market that will get a North American theatrical release," executive producer Devesh Chetty said. "The global interest in Asia and the taste for extreme sports are both growing, and Jan de Bont is going to deliver some action that will be very different to what has been seen before." Point Break Indo is set to shoot in Southeast Asia this autumn.

Jan de Bont raped the remake of "The Haunting" and his attachment to this project doesn't make me want to see it.

yeah excuse me for misreading, and not looking into that story too deeply. because we all know movie remakes/sequels are so much more important than half a million people dying and rotting away in the streets Mryamar and few 100,000 dead due to earthquakes in China. But yeah lets get back to who is remaking what and who should or shouldnt get Oscars.

If you took an extra 60 seconds to actually look at the article instead of making smug, false comments about remakes and sequels you wouldn't have had to do that. And no, a sequel is not a remake. The only way for a Point Break sequel to be a remake would be to bring back all of the characters who died horribly in the first movie. SO, with different characters, a different story I would have to say you are completely wrong.

a "Point Break" sequel? We already have like 3 of them. They are called "Fast and the Furious 1, 2 and 3" they were the SAME movie.
Inexperienced agent (insert generic name here) is assigned to go undercover in seedy world of (insert your extreme sport here) to determine if these seemingly innocent ruffians are actually thieves. During his investigation the agent befriends a criminal and can't decide whether he should do the job he was hired to do, or continue on his crooked path or villany!!
Funny thing is, Paul Walker even played his role in the first "Fast and the Furious" like a blonde Keanu Reeves. He had a good amount of "Dude" moments.
