dn_smith,

Alas, sarcasm just doesn't lift off the page as easily as one would wish.

Well most movies of the US shown in the Cannes Film Festival are not in competition.

Right. Hollywood has seldom trusted the Cannes judges that much. American indie producers will usually risk it--if they can get accepted for showing.

Almost every film on this list received an only "so-so" or just above average reception from every Cannes wrap up I read. Odd. It must have been a slow year.

JUDGE DREDD

I thought that the new JUDGE DREDD movie written by Alex Garland was being shown at Cannes? has it shown? whats the deal? still no pics or gossip yet!

Just proves how bad of a year it was in film. Good to see Javier Bardem win the Best Actor Award, He was great in No Country For Old Men and Vicky Christina Barcelona.

judging from the trailers, uncle boonmee seems like a pretty good film- the images are visually dazzling and it seems like a legit palme d'or winner. congrats to the film!

I just watched an american flick called 'blue valentine' and i think that one was pretty decent and "fresh" and i believe that one is worth cannes's award.

Well, probably this year wasn't a lucky year for american filmmaker, not merely because of political matter. Do you guys remember 'pulp fiction'?

hmmm.. what is this 'pulp fiction' you speak of? doesn't ring a bell..

Javier Bardem - a great leading man that can actually act. Refreshing, especially in a time when choices for great young lead actors are very limited.

Cannes is just an excuse for Hollywood to vacation on the riviera, get wasted and tell themselves how avante garde they are. **claps "courageous, so courageous" claps**

Given, that's exactly what I'd do if I was in their position, but since I'm not and I can't I feel free to judge them. Actually I'd probably go to one of the Greek Islands. Santorini or Zakinthos...all of the beauty, none of the French(read Parisian French, the others aren't so bad).

I prefer Cannes then the Oscars. I would have loved to check out Oliver Stone's "Wall Street:Money Never Sleeps" and Mike Leigh's "Another Year"

I'm so sick of people being so narrow minded when it comes to film. Yes there are some great american films, but they are becoming something of a rarity these days. There is a film revolution going on if we just open our eyes and sample what other countries like germany, austria, france and japan have to offer. Just like the early german expressionist movement of the 1920s what we see in europe and aisa may well pave the way for what hollywood chooses to regurgitate in a few years time. But then again some of us are far too lazy to read subtitles eh?
