A lantern-jawed ray-gun hero does battle with a villainous despot intent on achieving ultimate power in his lovingly-crafted, CG-heavy homage to the low-budget B-movies of yesteryear. Captain Eager is a hero with a reputation for always seeing his mission through to the end. Called upon by the hi-tech corporation Macro Space to investigate the dubious Colonel Regamun, who has used the "Mark of Voth" to overthrow the Veritan Sector. Simon DaVison's loopy labour of love succeeds where other offerings of pure homage (most recently 'Grindhouse') failed.
In the end there is something rather depressing about a film willing itself to be so crappy.
The cheerfully weird plot and hilariously bad acting are all part of the film's self mockery, which betrays a love for the genre's cheesy roots.
Lacking gags, proper characters or any comprehensible plot, it never rises above a one-joke movie - and that joke's on us. It's humour Jim, but not as we know it.
Dull and dreary despite DeVison's enthusiasm, take heart in remembering the chances of catching Captain Eager on a big screen are nil.
