Captain Pantaleon Pantoja (Salvador del Solar) is a straightlaced Peruvian military man with a new wife and a child on the way. Honest and hardworking, he has no choice but to follow orders when he is given the assignment of supplying prostitutes to troops stationed in the Amazon so that they will stop hassling the limited supply of local girls. Trouble arises though, when Pantoja faces great sexual temptation in the form of one of the "working girls" (Angie Cepedas) and his cover is under threat of being blown by local authorities. Based on the novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, CAPTAIN PANTOJA is spicy arthouse romp. [More]

Reviews for Captain Pantoja and the Special Services
Francisco Lombardi's film is a bit long, but upholds comedy and jungle sensuality on a very amusing tripod.
Wears one down with a long running time and diminishing returns on its wicked premise.
Sex comedy has a fun premise, but is surprisingly neither very sexy nor funny.
Promises to skewer sexual politics but instead turns out to be a one-joke pony.
Pantaleon y las Visitadoras, which has three distinct acts, each of which works as a self-contained little film, runs a whopping 138 minutes. But it remains enjoyable, even as it grows darker.
A pedestrian film that provides little more than a superficial treat.
This may not seem to be the stuff of comedy, but a comedy it is, and a compelling one too, laden with hot sex and standout performances,
Del Solar's performance as the quintessential company man gives the film an unexpected poignancy: Neither a rebel nor a conscienceless drone, he's a man who knows his limitations and tries to do his best within them.
Without the character detail and internal motivations that presumably exist in the novel, the film feels too schematic, a reduction to types going through the paces of plot.
Director Francisco de Lombardi fills his sensual film with plenty of gorgeous shots of the lush landscape and its equally exotic, miniskirted 'fauna.'
This film might've fared better if those involved realized how fiercely their material begs for a plunge into the deep end.
