Major Carrington (David Niven) is a war hero making the difficult adjustment to commander of a peacetime artillery battery. Hard pressed for money and under constant pressure from his materialistic wife Valerie (Margaret Leighton), he takes money owed to him by the army for personal expenses, which he thinks he will never receive, from the company funds without permission from his superiors. When this is discovered he is brought up on charges. Casting David Niven, better know for light comedy (THE BISHOP'S WIFE), in the lead in this taut courtroom drama paid off, as Niven gives a focused performance as the proud, decorated officer caught up in the minutia of army regulations. In the courtroom scenes, along with some unexpected plot twists, Niven's exchanges with the prosecutor (Mark Dignam) provide the highlight of the film. Asquith's direction, never flashy or distracting when dealing with original stage material, allows the actors (and there are good performances in all roles) to bring the drama to the surface in this well rounded transition of a stage work into a successful film.
