"Cars 2" Coming Soon(ish)?

For the moment, this story falls under the category of "wild speculation masquerading as rumor," but we suppose Pixar has earned the privilege of having its every move dissected -- past, present, and future -- so here's some dish about what the studio might be planning for, um, 2011.

JV Pixar News reports that "a very reliable anonymous source" is saying "Cars 2" will be Pixar's follow-up to "Toy Story 3," which is currently slotted for a summer 2010 release. As the article points out, one hurdle facing a sequel is the recently-announced retirement of "Cars" star Paul Newman, but if Pixar has a choice between making another bajillion dollars or ending a potential franchise, it's hard to see them choosing anything but the former.

Again, this isn't based on much of anything other than a heard-it-from-this-one-guy report, from Al Lutz at Miceage, claiming Newman was heard saying, at the Indy 500, that "Cars 2" would be coming out; on the other hand, something has to go on Burger King cups four years from now, and those adorable "Cars"-toons are as good as any.

I really hope that this is a rumor. I loved Cars but I think this falls under "really really unnecessary".

Come on Pixar. You've never stooped to unnecessary sequels before!

I'd rather see a sequel to The Incredibles, with the kids in their teenaged years, and Mr. Incredible and his wife dealing with becoming middle-aged superheroes.

Though it would be hypocritical for them to start producing another sequel after sending out the message in "Ratatouille" against riding a familiar name (franchise) at the expense of making something fresh and new.

Toy Story 2 was an exception to the sequel rule because the story justified its existence. It still had something left to say, and as much as Pixar has earned my trust of their "story first" motto, if Cars gets a sequel I can't see it being made for "story first".

Though it would stay true to Pixars other m.o.: Doing the unexpected. Cars is Pixar's least successful enterprise. If it the motivations were money first, story second, the obvious sequel would go to "The Incredibles".

The Incredibles and Monsters Inc. deserve sequels if Pixar decides a sequel must be made.

Cars is by far the worst Pixar movie ever... I'm not saying it was drop dread horrible, but compared to their others movies, it stunk. And most people i know tend to agree.

I really hope they change their mind, and if they don't, i hope they make it good.

I actually liked Cars a lot, but I agree, I can't see a sequel to this. Much better left alone. Incredibles, on the other hand has so many other stories it could tell. Love that idea mentioned before about the kids being teens, parents getting older, even Jack-Jack growing up! Toy Story 3 should be good though!

The only Pixar film that suggested a sequel was, THE INCREDIBLES. I just loved that one, and I hope they do a sequel to it. Toy Story could have many sequels. Cars....NAAAAAHHH!! I hope it is a rumor. I actually liked A BUGS LIVE too....they could do a sequel on that. The short film at the beginning of Ratatoullie was the best since the old guy playing chess with himself....I beleive that was called "Geri's Game". The aliens were cracking me up! I wish they could get some quality writers and spit out another musical classic as good as Beauty and the Beast and Lion King. I think that genre is due for a comeback!

Pixar entered the Disney fold on its own terms, and essentially took over the Disney animation department (John Lasseter is now essentially the head of Disney animation). RT regulars will note that he recently dissolved Disney's direct-to-DVD sequel stream (Peter Pan III, Cinderella III, etc.) and is allowing the two currently in-production sequels to be released and then that's all! So, clearly this would not have happened if they are only interested in making cash - because those things made cash. Lasseter himself has called the soon-to-be-released Tinkerbell direct-to-DVD film "unwatchable."

Pixar is not in the business of making sequels - and only do it if there is a strong enough script to warrant a second film. The only reason Toy Story 2 (their only sequel so far) was created is because the script was very strong - heck that movie is better than the 1st. And I expect Toy Story 3 will also be a strong story (because they are all about the story).

As for a Cars 2, I'll also believe it when I see it. And if it does show the light of day, it'll be because they story is good. And remember that even though Cars was "weak" in Pixar terms, it was quite strong compared to the bulk of other kiddie flix out there - CGI or not.

The last sentence in the above post is true, guys. Whatever you may have thought about Cars, the only two animated movies that even came close to rivalling it last year were Over The Hedge and Monster House. Pixar's first mass disappointment still ended up being the best animated movie of the year.

And personally, I did like Cars. But I don't really see the use of a sequel, nor how they could pull it off. But if Pixar wants to, then I'll trust them. I suppose they could always make a movie about the resurge in popularity of Radiator Springs or something.

Even though Cars wasn't as successful financially as a film, it's doing great in licensed goods even in 2007. I work for a toy company and we won't touch Ratatouille with a 10 foot pole (which sucks since I love that movie), but we're still planning more Cars items for 2008 and beyond.

So that alone is a reason for Disney to want a sequel. Whether or not this influences Lasseter at all I don't know but if he thinks he can make a good movie out of it then I guarantee you Disney will be all over that.
