Consensus: Critics say that by focusing on one man in one setting, Cast Away takes considerable risks, but ultimately it succeeds. Tom Hanks is excellent in the role, and the movie's themes make it larger than a simple physical survivor story.

Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment's notice, to far-flung locales -- and away from his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt.
Chuck's manic existence abruptly ends when, after a plane crash, he becomes isolated on a remote island -- cast away into the most desolate environment imaginable. Stripped of the conveniences of everyday life, he first must meet the basic needs of survival, including water, food and shelter. Chuck, the consummate problem solver, eventually figures out how to sustain himself physically. But then what? Chuck begins his true personal journey.
After four years, fate gives Chuck a chance to fight his way back to civilization, only to find an unexpected emotional challenge greater than all the earlier physical ones. His ability to persevere and to hope are a product of his life-changing experience. Though the conclusion of Chuck's story may not be a conventional Hollywood ending, it is, like life, full of truth, pain and promise. -- © 2000 20th Century Fox

Reviews for Cast Away
Tom Hanks stands three coconuts above the CBS whiners and gives an astounding performance as a modern-day Robinson Crusoe.
Even those who perceived Gump as nothing but a smug affirmation of mealymouthed platitudes, and thus hated it, may well be surprised at the subtleties and emotional depth that Cast Away eventually reaches.
In addition to Hanks’ superb acting, amazing cinematography by Don Burgess helps lift this movie above the ordinary.
I found Cast Away very transporting, all the more so the second time around.
Tom Hanks does an exceptional job as the only real character in the film
The beginning and ending of the film are a bit underdeveloped, but that’s just quibbling.
Remains one of the more vividly transporting films I've come into contact with. It's heartbreaking, darkly comedic, bravely observational, and ultimately, pure emotional poetry.
... fascinating, moving, full of meaning and well worth investing 143 minutes of your life.
An interesting and courageous experiment....[but] risk-taking in itself does not guarantee a great film
Hanks' physical transformation also sets Cast Away apart, but what's most compelling is the way it gives the audience credit for being able to put the pieces together.
Cast Away's finest moments consist of Hanks alone with his surroundings.
Hanks has little besides his body at his disposal, and the actor still creates one of the most poignant and tragic characters ever committed to celluloid.
One more project like this (or Gump) and this could be the best actor/director team since DeNiro and Scorsese.
On those rare occasions when Hollywood tries, it can still produce great films.
In the end Cast Away is good enough that you'll forgive [Zemeckis] for making Contact, Forrest Gump and What Lies Beneath.
Zemeckis does a sturdy, absorbing job with the island and ocean scenes.
