In addition to Hanks’ superb acting, amazing cinematography by Don Burgess helps lift this movie above the ordinary.

Consensus: Critics say that by focusing on one man in one setting, Cast Away takes considerable risks, but ultimately it succeeds. Tom Hanks is excellent in the role, and the movie's themes make it larger than a simple physical survivor story.

Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment's notice, to far-flung locales -- and away from his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt.
Chuck's manic existence abruptly ends when, after a plane crash, he becomes isolated on a remote island -- cast away into the most desolate environment imaginable. Stripped of the conveniences of everyday life, he first must meet the basic needs of survival, including water, food and shelter. Chuck, the consummate problem solver, eventually figures out how to sustain himself physically. But then what? Chuck begins his true personal journey.
After four years, fate gives Chuck a chance to fight his way back to civilization, only to find an unexpected emotional challenge greater than all the earlier physical ones. His ability to persevere and to hope are a product of his life-changing experience. Though the conclusion of Chuck's story may not be a conventional Hollywood ending, it is, like life, full of truth, pain and promise. -- © 2000 20th Century Fox

Reviews for Cast Away
Hanks fans may very well love this movie, but it does not fulfill its promise.
A technical marvel with indelible scenes that linger long after the movie has ended.
the usually flashy and fun-loving Zemeckis opts for an almost documentary-style approach here, with cunning use of silence, darkness and the sound of pounding rain to convey Chuck's disorientation and desperation.
Há um filme belíssimo escondido em Náufrago. Infelizmente, ele está enterrado no meio de duas extremidades que deixam muito a desejar.
Chuck has flashes of ingenuity that filled me with the thrill of discovery and invention, and stretches of failure that I felt just as acutely.
One more project like this (or Gump) and this could be the best actor/director team since DeNiro and Scorsese.
Cast Away isn't the first to recognize our modern need for primal tales, but it is among the most accomplished. It plugs straight into our unplugged fantasies.
There's something inherently compelling about the situation, even if the movie screwed up on the specifics.
Two hours of good movie were only moderately spoiled by thirty minutes of Nora Ephron-style dreck.
Hanks and Zemeckis begin with an intriguing premise...and, by the film's end, smother that premise under a tidal wave of sentimentality and schmaltz.
The script is insightful and unafraid to tackle very serious issues head on. And the performances are brilliant.
If I didn't know any better I'd say that this film was written in order for Tom Hanks to win yet another Academy Award. Yikes! He may pull it off.
If the stuff on the island is very, very good, let us at least admit that everything else could have been a lot worse. I mean, Ron Howard could have directed it, right?
I found Cast Away very transporting, all the more so the second time around.
Hanks conducts a master class in acting by showing a man losing his sense of himself in fractional gradations.
