A brave film, and a surprisingly absorbing and finally affecting one, partly because it's about that least American of trinities -- silence, solitariness, and the spiritual deepening impossible to achieve without both.

Consensus: Critics say that by focusing on one man in one setting, Cast Away takes considerable risks, but ultimately it succeeds. Tom Hanks is excellent in the role, and the movie's themes make it larger than a simple physical survivor story.

Hanks stars as Chuck Noland, a FedEx systems engineer whose personal and professional life are ruled by the clock. His fast-paced career takes him, often at a moment's notice, to far-flung locales -- and away from his girlfriend Kelly, played by Helen Hunt.
Chuck's manic existence abruptly ends when, after a plane crash, he becomes isolated on a remote island -- cast away into the most desolate environment imaginable. Stripped of the conveniences of everyday life, he first must meet the basic needs of survival, including water, food and shelter. Chuck, the consummate problem solver, eventually figures out how to sustain himself physically. But then what? Chuck begins his true personal journey.
After four years, fate gives Chuck a chance to fight his way back to civilization, only to find an unexpected emotional challenge greater than all the earlier physical ones. His ability to persevere and to hope are a product of his life-changing experience. Though the conclusion of Chuck's story may not be a conventional Hollywood ending, it is, like life, full of truth, pain and promise. -- © 2000 20th Century Fox

Reviews for Cast Away
A blockbuster with the soul of an art film, Cast Away is an enormously gratifying surprise ending to a generally disappointing year at the movies.
Cast Away is a sad movie of the sort that Hollywood almost never makes: not three-hankie sad, not 'go have yourself a good cry' sad, but the kind of thing that, if you let it in deep enough, can send a shudder to your very soul.
Tom Hanks does a superb job of carrying Cast Away all by himself for about two-thirds of its running time, but isn't much helped by additional characters in the opening and closing sequences.
Even those who perceived Gump as nothing but a smug affirmation of mealymouthed platitudes, and thus hated it, may well be surprised at the subtleties and emotional depth that Cast Away eventually reaches.
As they did in Forrest Gump, Zemeckis and Hanks go Big Theme hunting. This time their prey eludes them.
Zemeckis does a sturdy, absorbing job with the island and ocean scenes.
At its best, Cast Away, like Titanic, awes us with its sheer oceanic sweep and its cosmic apprehension of human insignificance.
It's easy now to take Hanks' acting for granted, but his work here is astonishing, among the best in his illustrious career. If Cast Away disappoints, it's only because the presumption of excellence is so strong.
On those rare occasions when Hollywood tries, it can still produce great films.
Add in Chuck's deteriorating hold on sanity -- evinced by the inspired conceit of his relationship with a volleyball on which he's drawn a face -- and you have a long middle section of bravura filmmaking.
What a better cinematic palette we would have if stars wielded their clout like this more often."
Cast Away's finest moments consist of Hanks alone with his surroundings.
