It can't overcome an easy predictability and its humor is hit-and-miss at best.

Consensus: A great concept, but the movie fails to develop the characters and some of the jokes are hit-or-miss.

In the outrageous comedy CATS & DOGS, Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) is on the verge of discovering a chemical formula that would give humans immunity to dog allergies, making dogs the clear favorite of humans over cats, their age-old enemies. When a power-mad white Persian cat named Mr. Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes) decides to kidnap the professor and his family and attempt to reverse the formula, making all humans allergic to dogs, canine operative Butch (voiced by Alec Baldwin) and young, hapless recruit Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire) must stop Mr. Tinkles's nefarious plans. Blending live action with realistic puppetry and seamless computer animation, CATS & DOGS reveals an amusingly secretive world of talking felines and canines where cats parachute out of stealth planes in night-vision goggles and dogs operate hi-tech computer equipment. And in one of the film's most stunning sequences, a Russian mercenary kitten attacks the Brody household with an arsenal of weapons including plastic explosives and bladed boomerangs. Entertaining for both children and adults, the film also features Elizabeth Perkins and the vocal talents of Susan Sarandon, Jon Lovitz, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Joe Pantoliano. [More]

Reviews for Cats & Dogs
Rather than offer a pedigree blend of comedy and action, Cats & Dogs is just another summertime movie mutt.
Cat people and dog people of all ages will enjoy the tactics of this interspecies war, though the film makes the somewhat exaggerated assumption that cats are selfish and fascist and that dogs are selfless and humanist.
There is enough dopey, exuberant fun to delight children without driving their parents completely crazy.
Overall, there is a welcome feeling of innocence throughout this PG film, which makes it a great movie to share as a family -- if your brood is old enough to sit still for 90 minutes.
With the human actors marking time at best (and that best is rare), Cats & Dogs becomes a series of expensive special effects in search of a scenario worth the price tag.
A warning for those who belly-laughed the first time they saw ninja cats in Matrix-style combat and canines playing with James Bond's toys during the trailer for Cats & Dogs: The film's bark is better than its bite.
Consistently amusing and sometimes hilarious, Cats & Dogs uses animatronics and computer animation, much like Babe, to pull off a convincing illusion of animals talking, playing and waging war.
Nowhere near as good as Babe, and only slightly better than a Meow Mix commercial.
At its best, Cats and Dogs is a series of missed opportunities that represents adequate entertainment for the age 5-9 crowd. At its worst, this is another example of why so many PG-rated films fail at the box office.
Good quality kiddie fare and well worth the price of a matinee on a hot summer's day.
"They stack the doggone deck against the sneaky felines but it's frisky, furr-ocious family fun for a matinee."
The filmmakers seem more worried about their 6,700 latex mice and gallons of food coloring than their characters.
