Reviews Counted:103

Average Rating:3.6/10

Consensus: Despite its stylized and impressive sets, this horror-monster movie mish-mash suffers from endless cliches and wildly implausible plotlines.

Rated: PG-13 [See Full Rating] for intense creature violence.

Runtime: 1 hr 37 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

Theatrical Release:Aug 26, 2005 Wide

Box Office: $14,888,028

Synopsis: A sexy bunch of underwater explorers are summoned to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, where scientists have discovered a gigantic cave network containing a lengthy underground river. Cutting-edge... A sexy bunch of underwater explorers are summoned to Romania's Carpathian Mountains, where scientists have discovered a gigantic cave network containing a lengthy underground river. Cutting-edge breathing gear gets unpacked, camaraderie and budding romances develop, and then everyone becomes trapped in the depths, where monsters start picking off cast members, one by one. Escape depends on Jack, played by the dependably steely-eyed Cole Hauser (PAPARAZZI), who picked up a bad monster bite that may have infected his mind. Super-vixen Charlie (Piper Perabo) stands by him and displays a soothing screen presence as the tomboy rock climber in the crew, while Leana Headey plays the sexy Romanian biologist who fears that Jack is turning into a monster himself. Fans of B-movie monster movies should find this a nice cave to visit; there's no skimping on action or impressive set design, and each new cavern is weirder and more claustrophobic than the last. Staggeringly tall cliff faces, dark ominous waters, and a great, nerve-wracking orchestral soundtrack all add up to a fun horror adventure in the classic Saturday matinee sense. Of course, like all good monster movies, it borrows liberally from past classics: think of it as ANACONDA meets ALIEN by way of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, and if that doesn't sound like a fine way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon, make sure you tread carefully as you exit THE CAVE! It’s all noise and motion that blurs the action to the point of incomprehensibility.

You will laugh at numerous unintended jokes -- including the baked-in opportunity for a sequel.

It may dredge up a few frights, but for the most part The Cave is a spelunker clunker.

...it's difficult to take any of this mess seriously. But even unintentional laughs tend to come at a premium in a movie this cheap and derivative.

Contained enough unusual scenery and frightening sequences to keep my mind off its farfetched plot most of the time.

Years ago, The Cave would have made an adequate bottom half of double bills. But at today's ticket prices, this is a wait-for-cable movie if there ever was one.

Not once is The Cave scary, suspenseful, or worth the brain cells you'll lose trying to dumb yourself down to its level.

so-so... delivers a couple of jolts before the dopey finale, which takes place in a steamy, flame-filled cavern that looks alarmingly like Dante's Go-Go Lounge.

Just watch the last half-hour of The Cave when it hits HBO or Cinemax. That’ll be all you need to see, and you won’t have to waste eight bucks on it.

Constrained and unreadable, the space turns invaders into opportunistic killers (or maybe just rearrangers, a next step in body snatching).

The film’s creatures are quite derivative, while one of the most intriguing revelations pertaining to them is never convincingly exploited or properly explained.

Even for a weird creature-feature, this murky, run-of-the-mill scare story is decidedly mundane.
