Consensus: The Cell offers disturbing, stunning eye candy, but it is undermined by a weak and shallow plotline that offers nothing new.

Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) is a child therapist working on an experimental new technology that allows for direct access into someone else's mind. However, the benefits of the technology are still unproven. Meanwhile FBI Agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) is hard at work tracking down a serial killer who encloses women in a small glass cell and drowns them. Novak is able to identify the killer as Carl Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio), but before he can be arrested, he goes into a coma. The only way to rescue his most recent victim is for Catherine to enter his mind using the experimental technology. However, Stargher's mind is so warped and frightening, there's no way to know what Deane will encounter inside of it. THE CELL is the feature film debut of Tarsem Singh, a renowned commercial and video director who overloads his film with visual splendor and horror, while sticking to a simple story of innocence lost and innocent victims saved. A must-see for fans of dark psychological thrillers, THE CELL features some controversial violence and sexual content along with amazing special effects. A chilling yet strangely elegant thriller, THE CELL is a stunning cinematic experience. [More]

The Cell has virtually nothing on its mind but showcasing its sumptuous, year's-best production design, fine special effects, and demented sensibility.

[Singh] sketches his central characters thinly, and he ends the film on a slightly confusing note.

The Cell becomes the first serial killer feature in a long time to take the genre in a new direction.

Taken on its own boldly visual terms, The Cell can be enjoyed as a stroll through a contemporary museum of your purplest imaginings.

The Cell is far from a perfect movie. But it is the creepiest one I've seen since The Sixth Sense.

The Cell spends most of its time trying to live up to its dazzling visuals. It never quite does, although it and Jennifer Lopez are quite an eyeful.

Rendered in an ultimately hollow style that can't conceal the story flaws, of which there are many.

While the level of imagination impressed me I was repulsed by what it was applied to.

Ultimately succumbs to the old style over substance syndrome that often afflicts directors who cut their directorial teeth on flashy music videos and TV commercials.

All torture, all the time, all photographed (by Paul Laufer) and production designed (by Tom Foden) as if it were a TV spot for Chanel.

It's magnificent to look at, but at the half way mark the visuals get so far out they cease to serve the sketchy story.

Beneath the considerable eye candy ... The Cell is an awfully generic variation on the overworked serial-killer genre.

The costumes are phenomenal, the set design ravishing and the sadistic inventiveness extraordinary; it's a shame it's all harnessed to a clichéd story.
