Without the found-footage distraction, Chronicle is an entertaining and creative take on the concept of teenage superpowers.
The found footage thing, I believe, was used specifically so they could overcome it as a limitation (that is one of the main themes of the movie, after all), and the way in which that limitation is overcome is very clever.
I don't think there was any reason they chose to do it other than that.

IF you had even remotely paid attention to the actual plot as opposed to grilling a well produced, thought provoking movie, you'd have noticed that the use of found-footage was to follow the beginning concept that Andrew was going to be filming his entire life so he could document it properly. Furthermore, Steve Montgomery had mentioned that the use of the camera made it seem like Andrew was putting a barrier between himself and the world. The use of foundfootage makes us watch the movie from the viewpoint of an unbiased, invisible but 1st person point of view. Don't be a critic if you can't notice this stuff.

Nonexistent special effects? Is that seriously all you're worried about when it comes to "Chronicle"?

This movie made me sick to my stomach due to all of the 8mm video footage and the screen moving around. Same as Blair Witch. The rest of the evening I felt nauseous. Blah.

8mm video was 20 years ago. Also, movie screens don't move around.

What's wrong with you people? The found footage aspect was incredible in this movie. Most of the time the camera is floating by itself with little to no shaking, they use actual cinematic shots instead of deliberately terrible amateur shots, and by the climax the (multiple) cameras become a metaphor for the main character's growing egotism and his obsession with his newfound powers. Special effects were fine without being overplayed, the camera was never a distraction and actually felt like it's own character. Gimmicky handheld-cam movies like Cloverfield and Trollhunter can't compare to this.

Agreed. Though I also really enjoyed Trollhunter and especially Cloverfield.

you will never use the term "found-footage" again...also, "issues" and "are you feeling me?...you will abandon found language and use your own or none at all...otherwise, in the next life you will be relegated to the status of a latvian pretzel cart vendor...you have been warned...
