Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera. Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian film uses a rapid-cutting style to flash back and forth in time. Cinematographer Cesar Charlone shoots with an overexposed glow in a film that may seem numb to violence, but reveres photography. Director Meirelles was assisted by Katia Lund, a filmmaker who had previously shot in the Rio ghettos. [More]

Reviews for City of God
Sometimes a movie comes along that just floors you, its images burn so deeply.
This marvellous film ... testifies to the awesome creativity of Brazil's underclass.
City of God takes us into one of the most dangerous slums in the world.
City of God may offer few solutions and little hope, but its remarkable artistry and heartrending content make it a movie for the ages.
As violent as it is accomplished, City of God -- like its eponymous slum -- may divide audiences just as it divides its population of warring youths.
This ultra-realist MTV-style spectacle has the style and urgency of Amores Perros but none of its moral ambiguities.
Harsh and extremely shocking. And also one of the most moving and forceful films of the year.
This film is the most original synthesis of pop storytelling into a new form since The Matrix.
The direction is often inspired and sure-handed, even if it's sometimes unfocused or overambitious.
Compelling in its faithful portrait of a Rio 'favela,' or slum city, and of how violence really takes place when people no longer care.
