Nicole Conn, who wrote and directed, has not yet learned to do either job with spontaneity and naturalness, and the function of each scene is made so awkwardly clear that we wonder why the characters don't catch on as quickly as we do.
I agree with Mr. Ebert that the two women finally coming together was a bit dragged out, but it was not about them not "catch(ing) on". Claire has always thought of herself as heterosexual and was fighting the possibility that she could be a lesbian. This is what drove her to run to a man to have sex, immediately after she almost made a move on Noel. There was a lot of toil and fear within Claire, until she finally accepted this fact and could, only then, be with Noel.
