When drummer Phil Collins assumed stewardship of Genesis after the departure of singer Peter Gabriel in 1975, he steered the band away from near-symphonic prog-rock toward a more commercially accessible sound that culminated in his 1981 solo debut FACE VALUE. Driven by confessional lyrics detailing the breakup of his marriage, upbeat horn arrangements that would soon become his trademark, and a vestige of Genesis-like atmospherics, the album's R&B-flavored pop stylings produced two Top 20 hits and launched Collins' long and successful '80s solo career. This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series recounts the making of FACE VALUE through interviews with Collins, rare home movies and photos, and previously unseen performances of album tracks like "I Missed Again," "This Must Be Love," and, of course, the urban-legend classic "In the Air Tonight."
