CLASSIC ALBUMS takes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Band's self-titled 1969 album, which includes some of the group's most influential songs such as "The Weight" and "Up On Cripple Creek." Part of a series of documentaries broadcast on VH-1 and PBS, the film features interviews with Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and producer John Simon. Conversations about musical techniques and styles are offset by performances with luminous guests such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Don Was. Recording in a studio outside of Hollywood Hills, Robertson performs "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" on solo piano, Hudson does multiple instrumental keyboard solos, and Danko offers a solo rendition of "When You Awake."
